Improving reentry for inmates by addressing substance use disorders with King County, WA
According to the NIH, 63% of inmates identify substance use treatment as a primary need upon reentry. Unfortunately, most reentering persons are unable to access community-based substance use treatment upon release facing long wait lists, transportation and staffing shortages, and exceedingly high costs.
In partnership with King County Jail Health Services’ Release Coordinators and Washington State Department of Corrections (DOC), King County, WA inmates reentering after incarceration will now have access to IGNTD’s virtual substance use recovery system and support community to help address their needs.
To support King County, WA, IGNTD developed an online treatment reentry portal to make substance use disorder, mental health, and general life skills support readily available to those reentering. The portal for King County will provide evidence-based, virtual, 24/7 substance use disorder support and access to individual and group coaching, peer-support services, and case management.
IGNTD is able to provide this life changing technology to those in King County thanks to the Second Chance Act, which aims to reduce recidivism, increase public safety, and improve the outcome and quality of life of individuals reentering society after incarceration. Signed into law on April 9, 2008, and reauthorized in 2018, the Second Chance Act authorizes federal grants for vital programs and systems reform aimed at improving the reentry process.
Leveraging IGNTD’s Smart Personalized Adaptive Recovery System (SPARx) – an easy-to-use, interactive, discrete, shame-free, and affordable recovery platform – the portal will enable users to self-report in response to a few questions about how they are feeling each day This information will be used to track user progress and to surface the most relevant content by adapting to the users’ current moods and struggles.
IGNTD’s work with King County is supported by a Bureau of Justice Assistance grant, and the portal is designed to serve the needs of nearly any department of correction and aligns with the Principles of Drug Abuse Treatment for Criminal Justice Populations.
IGNTD has a steady track record of helping individuals find freedom from addiction. Aliyah, a mother of two, found herself victim to meth addiction that ultimately led to her eldest daughter calling the police on her and a stopped suicide attempt. Seconds away from ending her life, Aliyah heard about IGNTD on the radio and joined almost immediately.
With IGNTD, Aliyah was able to defy 30 years of addiction and achieve sobriety in under a year. The program’s virtual and personalized design made it possible for Aliyah to continue working against addiction without judgment – regardless of relapse.
